Anywhere between five days and eight weeks, and the gap is not a measurement error. That is the honest answer to how long does it take to hire offshore staff: four different clocks share the one label. Days to a shortlist. Days to an accepted offer. Days to a start date. Days until the person does work you can bill. Vendors quote the first and founders budget for the fourth.

We sell against that confusion, so treat this as disclosure rather than pitch. Our own AI Recruiter page quotes a range, and a range without a definition under it is a claim rather than a measurement.

The market got looser and your two open roles did not

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released Job Vacancies, Australia for August 2026 on 1 October. Vacancies fell 0.9 per cent over the quarter to 325,000, down 1.3 per cent on the year and 31.2 per cent below the May 2022 peak. Private sector vacancies fell 2.0 per cent to 286,300 while public sector vacancies rose 7.8 per cent.

Read that as a buyer's market and you will plan badly. In professional, scientific and technical services, the industry most of our readers sit in, advertised roles fell from 35,700 in May to 29,500 in August. That is 6,200 roles withdrawn in a quarter. Employers stopped advertising. Candidates did not arrive.

How long it takes to hire offshore staff depends on which clock starts

Start the clock at the job brief and you are measuring your own indecision as much as anyone's process. Start it at the shortlist and you have skipped the stage that usually takes the longest.

The ABS also reported in Labour Force, Australia on 24 September that unemployment rose to 4.6 per cent, with 722,900 people unemployed. Set that against 325,000 vacancies and the ratio is 2.2 people per advertised role. Comforting, and useless to you. The pool competing for a mid-level software role in Melbourne is not the national pool, and a looser market does not shorten the eleven conversations it takes to find the one person who can do the work.

What an empty seat costs while you shop for a timeline

What does one week of a vacant desk cost?

Full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 in May 2026, per the ABS release of 13 August, up 3.7 per cent on the year. That annualises to $108,352. Every week the seat stays empty, roughly $2,084 of work is not getting done, and it does not vanish. It lands on the three people already carrying it.

A full quarter of searching is $27,088 of displaced work. That is the number worth arguing about, not whether a shortlist took five days or eight.

Does a softer market shorten your search?

Not for the roles you are actually trying to fill. Fewer competing ads is not the same as more suitable applicants, and what the recruiting fee actually buys you does not change because the macro data softened.

The honest case for counting days to shortlist

It is the stage you control least and the one where time quietly disappears into someone else's inbox. A five-day shortlist against a four-week search is a real difference, and it is measurable, which is more than can be said for most hiring claims. If a provider can compress that stage, they should say so and publish the definition underneath it.

What to ask before you believe an offshore hiring timeline

Ask what the clock starts on and what it stops on. Then ask for the median rather than the best case, because the best case is a marketing number and the median is an operations number. We publish a range and we should publish a definition with it. Our own setup timeline is laid out in how a compliant hire is stood up quickly, and it is still a range.

If you are carrying $2,084 a week in work nobody is doing, sign up and put one role through it and measure the whole thing yourself, start to chargeable work. Count it honestly and tell us the number. We would rather be measured than believed.
