Which Roles Should Go First? Start Where Demand Is Already Straining You

What roles can be filled through offshore staffing is usually asked as a cost question, and answered with a list of the cheapest tasks a business can bear to lose. That gets the order wrong, and our pricing page exists so you can put a number against the answer rather than debate it. Start with the work that customer demand is already straining, because that is where an extra pair of hands earns money rather than saving it. On 27 August the Australian Bureau of Statistics gave every Australian services business a reason to look again.

Demand is not the problem

Household spending rose 1.1 per cent in July and 7.0 per cent over the year. Every one of the nine spending categories the ABS Monthly Household Spending Indicator tracks went up: clothing and footwear 1.6 per cent, recreation and culture 1.5, miscellaneous goods and services 1.3, health 1.2, hotels, cafes and restaurants 1.1, food 1.0.

Third consecutive monthly rise. Australians are spending.

Now put that next to the profit table from four days later, where retail trade profits fell 5.2 per cent for the quarter and other services fell 11.0 per cent. Customers are buying more and the businesses serving them are earning less on it. That gap is a cost-base problem wearing a demand problem's clothes.

The order that actually pays

Not the order most lists use. Work down from the bottleneck rather than up from the cheapest.

Roles that already have a queue

Whatever has a backlog right now. Order processing, invoicing, quoting, scheduling, first-line customer service, accounts payable, reconciliations. These are location independent, they are measurable, and the business is already losing revenue or goodwill because there is not enough of them. Adding capacity here converts directly into throughput.

Roles you keep pushing to the weekend

The bookkeeping, the reporting pack, the CRM hygiene, the marketing calendar. Founders do these at 9pm because they are unglamorous and non-negotiable. They are also the clearest candidates, and the ones where a business gets the most obvious week-one relief.

What does not belong on the list: anything requiring physical presence, anything requiring a licence tied to Australian registration, and anything where the person is the product and the client bought that specific person.

The arithmetic on one role

A full-time customer service or admin coordinator in an Australian capital costs $75,000 to $95,000 all in once superannuation, leave loading, workers compensation and payroll tax are counted. Employed properly offshore, the same role usually lands between $35,000 and $50,000 depending on country and seniority.

On a business turning over $3 million at a 12 per cent margin, one $40,000 saving is a third of a percentage point of margin. Two roles is most of a percentage point. That is not a rounding error in a year when your sector's profits fell 5 per cent.

The objection worth taking seriously

Some of this work is genuinely tangled up in institutional knowledge that nobody has written down, and moving it offshore means writing it down first. That is real, it takes weeks, and businesses routinely underestimate it.

It is also the argument for starting now rather than the argument against starting. The documentation debt is not going anywhere, and it gets worse every quarter you add headcount on top of it. A business that documents one process a fortnight has its whole back office written down inside a year, and that is worth having whether or not anyone ever works on it from Manila.
