Hire an offshore marketing assistant for the judgement, not the output. The first draft, the six subject line variants, the fifteen crops of one image: a model does that now. What it does not do is own the calendar, chase the approval, brief the freelancer and kill the campaign that is not working.
Most founders have not rewritten the role description. They are still buying the person who makes the assets.
What agency leaders said about the marketing job this week
On 25 September, B&T published predictions from independent agency leaders. Justin Ladmore of Enigma: "The capability gap between indies and holding companies has largely disappeared." The reasoning is worth reading twice. "AI will commoditise the process, which makes the craft, human creativity, relationships and decision-making even more valuable." Marilla Akkermans of Equality Media + Marketing: "The sector is in for a rough ride over the next 12 months."
Read that as a hiring instruction. If process is the commoditised layer, paying a premium for process seniority is paying for the thing that just got cheap. Outstaffer's own answer is an AI recruiter you can run a role through yourself, which is either useful or a measure of how much of the old shortlist was process too.
The rate card still prices the assistant you used to hire
Virtual Coworker publishes its rates, which is more than most of this market does. Its guide lists a Social Media Manager from "$11 AUD" an hour and a Digital Marketing Manager from "$14 AUD" an hour, on an "Inclusive Hourly Rate, No Extra Fees" basis, for "20 to 40 dedicated hours per week".
Three dollars an hour separates those two titles.
At the top of that range, 40 hours a week is roughly 173 hours a month. The $3 gap is $520 a month and $6,240 a year, and it buys a more senior version of the production work. Neither rate touches whether the person can decide what to run next. An Employer of Record fee published at $250 per employee per month sits on top of a salary you set, so the money you add can be aimed at judgement rather than a title.
What roles can be filled through offshore staffing once AI does the making?
The ones defined by decisions. An assistant who owns the content calendar, the approvals chain and the post-campaign read is doing work no model has the context for, because that context lives in your business. We argued the supply side when the junior designer an agency wants to hire turned out not to exist. This is the demand side: the role you are writing is the one the market is emptying.
How should you write the brief instead?
Name the five decisions the person will own in their first quarter and work backwards. If you cannot name five, you have a queue of tasks, which is what the roles that can be filled through offshore staffing meant before the tooling changed.
The honest case for buying hours
Plenty of small teams do need hands. A founder with no in-house marketer and a half-finished website does not need a strategist, they need someone to publish the thing. Buying hours at $11 is a rational answer, and the leaders quoted above are describing agency economics, not a thirty-person firm.
The trap is that the cheap version becomes the expensive version without anyone noticing. A queue of tasks turns into the person quietly running your calendar, and their judgement is load-bearing while their rate still says assistant.

Price the decisions, not the title
Stop shopping for a title on a rate card. Write the role around the five decisions, then pay for the person who can make them, on an arrangement where you can see what they earn and raise it when they are worth more. A card that moves $3 between two titles was never built for that.
Run one marketing role through it and compare the shortlist against the brief you would have written a year ago. The real question, and we have no settled answer: when you hire an offshore marketing assistant now, which of those five decisions are you willing to hand over in the first ninety days?
