In the largest randomised test on this question, applicants interviewed by an AI voice agent were 12 percent more likely to receive a job offer than applicants interviewed by a human recruiter, 18 percent more likely to start the job, and 18 percent more likely to still be there a month later. Humans made every hiring decision in both arms. The machine only ran the conversation.

Founders of a 25-person business will tell you the first interview is the one part of hiring they will never hand over. Outstaffer sells an AI recruiter that runs that first conversation, so take the rest as an interested party showing the working.

What the AI interview vs human interview trial actually measured

Brian Jabarian and Luca Henkel ran a natural field experiment inside a staffing firm, revised on arXiv on 11 September 2026. The sample was 70,884 applications received between March and June 2025, across 48 job postings and 41 client accounts. Applicants were randomly assigned a human or an AI voice agent, and recruiters decided every offer.

The offer gap was 1.03 percentage points, or 12 percent, at p<0.001. One month after starting, 5.89 percent of AI-interviewed hires were still employed against 4.98 percent of the human-interviewed group.

Did the AI make better hires or just faster ones?

Better, on the measures that cost money. Retention rose and the paper reports no decline in the productivity of the workers hired. The authors credit adaptive standardisation: the AI kept questions consistent while still responding to the individual, so it collected more hiring-relevant information than a tired human on their ninth call of the day.

Australian founders are not short of judgment, they are short of hours

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry published its 2026 Small Business Conditions Survey on 12 September, covering more than 1,000 businesses of 1 to 24 full-time equivalent staff. Increased costs came back as the biggest challenge at 63 percent, up 15 percent. Cash flow pressure rose 12 percent. Half of owners handle their own compliance.

That is the reader of this post.

The arithmetic on three roles

Say you are filling three roles this year. Outstaffer's pricing puts the agency alternative at $10,000 to $30,000 a hire, so $30,000 to $90,000 for the three. Against that 63 percent, the agency route is the first thing cut.

So you do it yourself, which is not free. Outstaffer publishes the saving from automating the screen and first interview at 15 to 20 plus hours per hire, with 3 to 6 hours of manager time still needed per role. Three roles at 20 hours is 60 hours. A working fortnight and a half, spent on the part of hiring the field data says you are worse at than a machine.

Before arguing the fee down, know what a recruiting fee actually buys you. The shortlist is the cheap part.

Where the human interview still wins

The honest counter is that this ran inside a staffing firm on high-volume roles. A 5 percent baseline retention rate says churn-heavy jobs, not one senior designer at a twelve-person agency. Nobody has run it on a single senior hire at a $6M professional services firm, so treat it as a strong signal, not a settled answer.

The other limit is real. The AI gathers information, it does not decide. Humans still made every offer. The question was never whether you have judgment. It is whether the first 45 minutes is where you spend it.

Should a small business let AI run the first interview?

If you are filling more than two roles a year and you are the bottleneck, yes, on the first round only. Keep the final conversation. Check whether the screening layer does more than keyword matching before trusting its shortlist.

My position: the first-round interview is the least defensible thing on a founder's calendar, and the ai interview vs human interview for hiring argument is mostly founders defending a task they never chose. To see what it produces on a live role, sign up and run one through it. Or keep the Thursday calls, which is also a decision.

The question the data cannot answer: does the candidate who walks out of an AI interview take your best applicant with them? Tell me what you have seen.
